Crowded Comics lets you have fun with the news -- one punch line at a time. We make comics and games in response to trending headlines, and our users add their jokes and opinions. We're democratizing news and editorial cartoons by crowdsourcing the captions and opinions for our original, timely comics. With our technology platform and open-ended content, Crowded Comics is making news and editorial cartoons more engaging, interactive, and even democratic.
We started Crowded Comics to develop a fun, new approach to engage readers in discussions about the news. Discontent with the American political and social landscape is at an all-time high. People across the political spectrum are frustrated, and many feel that their voices are never heard. We are addressing this head-on with our engaging, social platform that uses comics to pull people into the headlines, encouraging them to have fun with the news and to share their views about current events and politics.
Our professional cartoonists produce the art, but everyone has a voice: by sharing their poignant and funny captions, customizing our cartoons, and voting for and commenting on the submissions of other users. We are also partnering with both newspapers and news sites to syndicate our cartoons paired with local reader captions on both their sites and in the opinion sections of their print editions.
Crowded Comics first launched in restricted beta in late February 2012. We were selected to participate and pitched as one of eight News startups as the SXSW Accelerator in Austin, TX in March. Soon after, we started piloting some of our offerings with partners, and we launched our embeddable widget and partners control panel in June. Since then we released even more features in our core offerings, and we expanded into new areas, such as online games. Crowded Comics ceased operations and dissolved in late 2012.
